Red and Toxic

1:56
Preventing Workplace Harassment

Excitement about a dream job quickly turns into a nightmare. This scenario traces the disturbing escalation of workplace sexual harassment: manufactured one-on-one situations, boundary violations disguised as mentorship, and ultimately, explicit threats when the target resists.

The pattern is textbook harassment. The boss creates an off-site “team meeting” that no one else attends. She makes physical advances under the guise of professional development. When the employee sets boundaries, she weaponizes her authority: “I won’t accept no for an answer… I highly suggest if you like your job that you change your plans.”

This scenario powerfully illustrates why harassment training must address power dynamics. The victim isn’t confused about what’s happening—they’re trapped by the professional consequences of resistance. “This was my dream job” becomes a cage rather than an opportunity.

Organizations need comprehensive Harassment training that helps employees recognize these escalation patterns and understand their rights. Equally critical is Bystander Intervention training for colleagues who witness concerning behavior. Leadership teams require training on creating psychologically safe reporting environments.

Employees must trust that reporting harassment won’t cost them their careers—because that fear is exactly what enables toxic behavior to continue.
